Australia 2007 This photo essay reveals my impression of Aboriginal people at the Town Camps in Alice Springs. After 40 years of landmark vote, Aborigines were recognised as full Australian citizens for the first time. Remarkable how Indigenous communities are still marked as blank or parkland on the Australian maps. Aboriginal elder Dick Brown of Hopy's Town Camp quoted; "We thought that it would change for the better" Brown is partially paralysed down one side after a stroke but prefers staying in the camp not under hospital care so he can be with his extended family. The communities declined Minister Brough's proposed Memorandum of Understanding in May 2007. The offer of however of $60 Million dollars was to upgrade their communities in exchange for surrender of their housing to the Northern Territory Government. William Tilmouth, Executive Director of Tangentyere Council mentioned; "We should't have to sign over our land to get basic services that other suburbs get." Rosemary Miller, a resident of Morris Soak camp says; "Tell them to leave our land alone, We've already enough taken away from us!"
